Mumbai, India’s Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) is a public university with multiple campuses. Established in 1936 as the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work by the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, it is the oldest professional social work education facility in Asia. At the time, British India was known as the Bombay Presidency. The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) was formally renamed in 1944, and in 1964, the Indian government designated TISS as a presumed university in accordance with Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act (UGC), 1956.

This location is currently referred to as the Main Campus.[5] The Malti Jal and Jal A. D. Naoroji Campus Annexes, collectively referred to as the New Campus, were added to the Deonar campus in 2001. TISS opened two off-campuses in Guwahati and Hyderabad in 2011 in addition to a rural campus in Tuljapur, Maharashtra, in 1986. TISS provides teaching, training, research, and development support from institutes built around India, notably in Leh, Ladakh, Port Blair, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, in addition to these campuses.
