Located in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India, the Indian Institute of technical Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) is a public technical institute. In accordance with the Institutes of Technology Act, the Indian government designated it as an Institute of National Importance. One of India’s most esteemed academic institutions is IIT Kanpur. One of the first Indian Institutes of Technology, the university was founded in 1959 with support from a group of nine US research universities as part of the Kanpur Indo-American Programme (KIAP).

IIT Kanpur: History

The Indian government founded IIT Kanpur in 1960 with an Act of Parliament. The institute was founded in December 1959 in a room located in the Harcourt Butler Technological Institute canteen building at Kanpur’s Agricultural Gardens. The institute relocated to its current site in the Kanpur district in 1963, close to the Kalyanpur neighbourhood on Grand Trunk Road. Achyut Kavinde created the campus in a modernist architectural style.

IIT Kanpur: Campus

Situated around 420 hectares (1,000 acres) on the Grand Trunk Road, 15.3 km (9.3 mi) west of Kanpur City, is IIT Kanpur. The Uttar Pradesh government gave this land in 1960, and the institute relocated to its current location by March 1963.

There are roughly 6478 students in the institute, including about 500 research associates, 2540 postgraduate students, and 3938 undergraduate students.

The central library, department buildings, research centres, lecture hall complex, tutorial block, and auditorium are all located in the academic area. Outside of the academic area are the residence halls for students as well as additional amenities like the Sports Complex and Student Activities Centre (SAC). Undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate students are assigned to 15 Halls of Residence. Married research scholars are also provided with Single Bedroom Apartments (SBRAs) on campus.

In order to be considered for the 2024–26 MBA Batch, applicants must take the CAT 2023 exam, which is administered by IIMs.

Stage 1: First Application

Qualifications for the MBA Programme

The following criteria must be met in order to apply to the MBA programme at the Department of Management Sciences (DoMS), IIT Kanpur. These requirements are utilised to create a shortlist.

Regarding GEN, EWS, and OBC candidates

80 percentile or above overall in the CAT-2023
An equivalent degree recognised by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India, with an aggregate of 60% or a CPI of 6.0 on a scale of 10, or a Bachelor’s degree awarded by any university incorporated by an act of the central or state legislature in India, or other educational institutions established by an act of Parliament, or declared to be deemed as a University under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956.

After finishing higher secondary schooling (10+2) or an equivalent programme (diploma), the candidate must have completed a minimum of three years of education towards a bachelor’s degree or an equivalent certificate, with mathematics being one of the required courses.

For candidates who are SC and ST

CAT-2023 overall score in the 55th percentile or above
A bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from any university established by an act of the national or state legislature in India, from other educational institutions created by a law passed by Parliament, or from any institution deemed to be a university under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, or from any other education programme recognised by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India, with a cumulative 50% or a CPI of 5.0 on a scale of 10.

After finishing higher secondary schooling (10+2) or an equivalent programme (diploma), the candidate must have completed a minimum of three years of education towards a bachelor’s degree or an equivalent certificate, with mathematics being one of the required courses.

Stage 2: Short Listing of the Applications

The CAT-2023 percentile will be used to determine whether applications are shortlisted for additional processing. Based on the total number of eligible and completed applications submitted and the total number of granted seats in each category, the department will determine the cut-off percentiles for the various categories. For shortlisting, the overall CAT-2023 percentile will be taken into account.

Stage 3: Evaluation of personal interviews (PI) and group discussions (GD)

A GD/PI assessment will be performed for the candidates who made the short list. The effectiveness of applicants in group discussions will be assessed by GD committees.
Using a previously created score matrix, the panels performing the PI evaluation will examine candidates’ (a) educational background, (b) work experience, and (c) interview performance. Members of IIT Kanpur’s other departments, the Department of Management Sciences, and, if needed, experts from outside the university will make up the GD and PI assessment panels.

Reservation Policy

The approved norms on reservation [OBC (NCL): 27%, SC: 15%, EWS: 10%, ST: 7.5% and DAP (Differently Abled Persons) 3% horizontal across GN, SC, ST and OBC (NCL)] will be observed.
