Located in Kharagpur, West Bengal, India, the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur) is a public research university and technology centre that was founded by the Indian government. The institute, which was the first of the IITs to be founded in 1951, is acknowledged as an Institute of National Importance. The Indian government bestowed upon it the title of Institute of Eminence in 2019. One of India’s most esteemed academic institutions is IIT Kharagpur.
When India gained independence in 1947, the institute was first founded to provide engineering training. IIT Kharagpur: Admission Process
Eligibility Criteria
Minimum Requirements for Academic Eligibility to Enter an MBA Programme:
In order to be considered for admission to the MBA programme, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- An applicant has to possess any of the following:
A four-year minimum bachelor’s degree in engineering, technology, or pharmacy
OR
A master’s degree in commerce, economics, or science (with a bachelor’s degree in statistics or mathematics).
2. Minimum percentage of marks in the qualifying degree:
- General/EWS/OBC: Minimum of 60% marks (or CGPA of 6.5 on a 10-point scale)
- SC/ST/PWD: Minimum of 55% marks (or CGPA of 6.0 on a 10-point scale)
Please be aware that in the two scenarios mentioned above, the applicants’ eligibility will be determined in accordance with the aforementioned equivalency if their CGPA falls outside of the range of 10.0.
3. Applications are also accepted from candidates who have finished their degree requirements but are awaiting results, as well as those who are in their last year of their qualifying degree exams. If chosen, these candidates’ admittance to the programme will only be temporary. By May 31, 2024, the candidates who have been provisionally admitted must turn in a certificate from their university, college, or institute attesting to the fact that they have fulfilled all the prerequisites for earning a bachelor’s or master’s degree, as appropriate. By October 31, 2024, the final marksheet or certificate of passing the qualifying degree must be turned in for validation.
4. Candidates need to be in excellent health. The Institute’s Medical Officer’s judgement will be final in the event that a difference is discovered in the certificate of medical fitness that was provided during registration.
5. PWD applicants who wish to be considered for MBA admission must appear before a medical board at IIT Kharagpur by October 31, 2024, at the latest. The candidate will be bound by the Medical Board’s decision, which is final.
IIT Kharagpur: Selection Process for batch 2024-2026
There are two steps involved in choosing applicants for admission to the MBA programme at Vinod Gupta School of Management (VGSoM), IIT Kharagpur, for the 2024–2026 batch:
Final selection of candidates for admission based on a combined score consisting of application rating (AR), CAT 2023 performance, and personal interview (PI) performance. Shortlisting for online Personal Interview (PI) based on the criteria given in Section I.
Phase I: Selecting Candidates for Personal interviews (PI)
Participating in the PI is a requirement for admission. Based on their past academic performance, CAT 2023 scores, and other factors, as given below, the applicants are shortlisted for PI. To be considered for shortlisting for PI, applicants must meet the minimal CAT 2023 percentile, as stated below.
Candidates who meet the minimum CAT 2023 percentile eligibility requirement will be shortlisted for the PI based on their overall CAT 2023 scaled score out of 20, to which Application Rating (AR) will be applied. Every female applicant will receive an additional four marks added to their overall Gender Diversity Factor (GDF) scores. The application rating takes into account the applicant’s work history and professional qualifications in addition to their academic performance (marks or grade points earned) at various stages of their academic progression, including secondary (10th/matriculation), higher secondary (12th/intermediate), undergraduate (bachelor’s degree), and postgraduate (master’s degree, if any).
The table below contains the guidelines for Application Rating (AR) based on the candidate’s performance in terms of percentage marks earned in various academic degrees, work experience, and professional qualifications:

Candidates who have work experience will be rated (rating score G) according to the rules in Table 2.4, taking into account the length of their work experience. When assigning work experience scores, only experience obtained after graduation will be taken into account. Work experience obtained via projects, internships, or training programmes undertaken to fulfil curricular requirements will not be taken into account.
Application rating (AR) for work experiences
Note: The proportion of marks granted by the university, institution, or college, as appropriate, for the applicant’s qualifying or bachelor’s degree will be regarded as final. In the event that the University, Institution, or College does not award a percentage of marks, it will be determined using the applicant’s marks-sheet and the marks earned in each of the subjects specified. It is not permitted for candidates with CGPAs to convert to percentages. Since IIT Kharagpur has its own formula for the same, even using the university/institute conversion formula is prohibited.
The achievement measured by cumulative grade point average (CGPA) will be translated into “marks percentage,” as indicated below:
Stage II – Final Selection and Offer of Admission to MBA
Final selection in the second stage of the admissions process will be determined by the candidate’s performance in the online PI process, CAT 2023 performance, and the cumulative score of the application rating (AR). For the GDF, all female applicants will receive ten marks. The table below shows the weights assigned to the various components in order to arrive at the final score:

Each category’s final admission offer will be given based on merit. Even if an applicant meets the minimal requirements listed above, entrance to the VGSoM, IIT Kharagpur MBA programme is not certain.
How to fill out an application?
For domestic candidates looking to be admitted to the MBA programme, they need to finish the following steps after taking the CAT 2023 exam:
Step 1: Fill out the online application form found at the IIT Kharagpur ERP portal, which may be reached at https://erp.iitkgp.ac.in/IITKGPApplications/index Every field on the application form needs to be filled out. Any form that is not completed will be automatically disqualified from consideration.
Step 2: Pay the application fee (Rs. 1600 for General & NC-OBC candidates and Rs. 800 for SC/ST/PWD) when submitting the online application form. The application fee for female candidates will be the same as that of male candidates in the same category.
