Percentages Question 3 - CAT 2025

Question

Kamala divided her investment of Rs. 100000 between stocks, bonds, and gold. Her investment in bonds was 25% of her investment in gold. The annual returns were 10% on stocks, 6% on bonds, and 8% on gold. She earned a total return of Rs. 8200 in one year.

The amount, in rupees, that she gained from the bonds, was:

Step-by-Step Explanation

Let the investment in Gold be G.

Then,

  • Bonds = 0.25G
  • Stocks = 100000 − 1.25G

Using the total annual return,

10%S + 6%B + 8%G = 8200

Substituting the values,

10000 − 0.03G = 8200

G = 60000

Therefore,

B = 15000

Gain from bonds,

6% × 15000 = 900

Hence, the gain from bonds is Rs. 900.

💡 FundaMakers Tip: Express every investment in terms of one variable before forming the return equation. It makes the calculations much easier.
