XAT EXAM CUT-OFF
The XAT cut-offs are the minimum required percentiles for shortlisting candidates for the subsequent selection rounds (Group Discussion and Personal Interview). These cutoffs are dynamic and depend on several factors, including the total number of applicants, the overall exam difficulty, and the respective institute’s program intake.
XLRI Jamshedpur & Delhi-NCR Cutoff
XLRI has the highest cutoffs and uses sectional percentiles in addition to the overall percentile. The final cutoff also varies by program (BM vs. HRM) and gender (Male vs. Female).
Program | Category | Overall Percentile (Expected) | VALR Sectional | DM Sectional | QA & DI Sectional |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
BM (Business Management) | Male Engineer | 93–95 | 75+ | 75+ | 80+ |
BM (Business Management) | Female Engineer | 92–94 | 70+ | 70+ | 75+ |
BM (Business Management) | Male Non-Engineer | 92–94 | 75+ | 75+ | 75+ |
BM (Business Management) | Female Non-Engineer | 90–92 | 70+ | 70+ | 70+ |
HRM (Human Resource Mgt.) | Male Engineer | 91–93 | 80+ | 75+ | 70+ |
HRM (Human Resource Mgt.) | Female Engineer | 90–92 | 75+ | 70+ | 65+ |
XLRI Selection Strategy
- Sectional Scores are Critical: Unlike some other exams, XLRI strictly enforces sectional cutoffs. Even with a high overall percentile, failing to clear the minimum percentile in any one section (VALR, DM, or QA & DI) will lead to disqualification.
- Decision Making (DM) Focus: The DM section is often the tie-breaker and a mandatory element for shortlisting. A strong performance here is essential due to the section’s unique nature in XAT.
- Gender and Academic Diversity: XLRI offers slight relaxation for female candidates and non-engineers to promote classroom diversity, generally resulting in slightly lower expected overall cutoffs for these groups.
Cutoffs for Other Top XAT Accepting Colleges
Over 250 B-schools accept the XAT score, including prominent XAMI members and other highly-ranked institutions. These institutes generally have significantly lower cutoffs than XLRI, relying mostly on the overall percentile.
Institute | Program | Overall Percentile (Expected) | Insight |
|---|---|---|---|
IMT Ghaziabad | PGDM | 90–92 | High-demand institute; sectional cutoffs rarely apply. |
XIM Bhubaneswar | PGDM-BM | 88–91 | One of the top XAMI members after XLRI. |
GIM Goa | PGDM | 85–88 | Increasingly competitive; look for additional criteria like profile score. |
KJ Somaiya (KJSIM) | MBA | 84–86 | Accepts XAT scores; the 2026 application deadline was January 20. |
IRMA Anand | PGDM (RM) | 80–85 | Requires overall focus on profile and interview. |
Great Lakes Chennai | PGDM | 80–84 | Program-specific cutoffs may vary. |
Strategy for Non-XLRI Colleges
- Percentile vs. Profile: While the percentile is the initial filter, many non-XLRI B-schools, especially those in the 80–90 percentile range, weigh academic profile, work experience, and essay/interview performance more heavily.
- Check Individual College Deadlines: Admission deadlines for XAT-accepting colleges can be very close to the result date. For instance, the KJSIM application deadline for 2026 was January 20.
- Lower Percentile Options: Many institutes offer application support and scholarships for students with lower scores, emphasizing the importance of applying correctly.
XAT EXAM PATTERN
The XAT 2027 exam pattern will be a Computer-Based Test (CBT) with a total duration of 180 minutes. The exam is divided into two parts, featuring a total of 95 questions for 95 marks.
Section | Questions (Expected) | Part Timing | Weightage & Strategy |
|---|---|---|---|
Part 1 | 75 Questions | 170 Minutes | No sectional time limit; move freely between VALR, DM, and QA & DI. |
Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning (VALR) | 26 | Focus on author’s intent and critical reasoning. | |
Decision Making (DM) | 21 | Ethical, managerial, and situational caselets unique to XAT. | |
Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation (QA & DI) | 28 | Focus on Arithmetic, Algebra, and Geometry. | |
Part 2 | 20 Questions | 10 Minutes | GK marks are used for XLRI admissions and do not impact percentile. |
General Knowledge (GK) | 20 | 10 Minutes | Covers Current Affairs (last 12 months) and Static GK. |
Marking Scheme:
- Correct Answer: +1 Mark.
- Incorrect Answer (Part 1): -0.25 Marks.
- Un-attempted Questions: -0.10 Marks per question beyond the first 8 allowed skips.
- General Knowledge (Part 2): No negative marking.
- Essay Writing: Analytical essay writing is no longer part of the CBT and is evaluated during the GD-PI rounds.
Strategic Takeaways for XAT 2027
Focus on Accuracy:
Since incorrect answers lead to a penalty, it’s essential to answer questions carefully, especially in the Decision Making (DM) and Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation (QA & DI) sections.Strategic Skipping:
Avoid skipping more than 8 questions to prevent penalties. Skipping after that will reduce your score, so prioritize solving those questions you are confident about.General Knowledge:
Even though GK won’t affect your percentile, it’s still an important part of the selection process for XLRI, so stay updated on current affairs to maximize your score in this section.
